Many of the early books collections of the Sheridan Libraries also relay unique and copy-specific evidence of how they were produced, circulated, and consumed—that is, of the “history of the book” as a subject of study in its own right. These include decorative bindings, unique manuscript marginalia and other evidence of historical reading practices, including censorial redactions and approbations, interleaved volumes and extra-illustrations, palimpsestic manuscripts, binding waste, slip cancels, books in uncut sheets, &c. Bookish objects abound as well, including printed contact relics and folding book amulets, priestly cartaglorias, book coffrets, woodblocks and copperplates, dressed prints and broadsides, and much more. Illustrated essays on these will be coming soon.
